I'm especially proud to relay the following high value suggestions that will surely improve your game. They were garnered from the presentations of five of golf's top nationally rated teachers, comprising the presenters at the '09 South Florida PGA Biennial Teaching Symposium.
Mike Shannon, world renowned putting instructor, put forth his putting imperatives: a) The putter shaft must be an extension of the forearms at address. b)The elbows stay connected to the rib cage during the stroke. c) There must be a forward lean of the club-shaft at impact or, to say another way, the shaft is slightly forward of the putter-head at impact.
Dr. Gary Wiren discussed golf instruction from a historical perspective and the importance of maintaining good health and flexibility. He regaled the audience with stories of teachers from teachers from the early 1900's like Seymour Dunn, who taught legendary champion Walter Hagen. He showed off his 116 mph swing(not bad for a 74 year old). Many tips from the early pros still apply today which proves golf fundamentals are timeless.
Tom Ness, 2002 PGA Teaching Pro of the Year, says the secret of golf is compressing the ball, accomplished by a bent right wrist and flat left wrist at impact or as Ben Hogan called it, the "moment of truth".
PGA Head Professional Mke Wright of Shady Oaks CC, Fort Worth, Texas, provided interesting stories of his friend, the legendary Ben Hogan. He passed along Ben's secret. Mr. Hogan wanted his ball to fall to the right. So he weakened his left hand grip at address and cupped his left wrist at the top to open the club-face. This made it easy to hit a slight fade every time.
Martin Hall, '08 PGA Teacher of The Year offered this advice: Before teeing it up focus on constant grip pressure, holding the finish and tempo. Upon teeing it up, 1) let go and 2) leave it alone. He also reminds that shaft angle at address should equal shaft angle at impact.
